When I was a lonely 17 year old, living on the island of Jersey in the Channel Islands, feeling very homesick for India, I was sustained by the poems and plays of Rabindranath Tagore, The Crescent Moon, The Gardener, Gitanjali, and plays such as The Post Offi ce and Red Oleanders, satisfi ed my nostalgia for all that I had behind in India. He was truly my companion in those distant days. And I still turn to his writings for pleasure and comfort.
